About the Role

Launch Housing (LH) and the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) partnered to develop the Foyer model in Victoria and provide the service development and service provision of the two current Education First Youth Foyers (EFY) respectfully. Education First Youth (EFY) Foyers provide support to young people between the ages of 16-24 who are unable to live at home, access to mainstream education, training and employment opportunities, while living in student-style accommodation, located on TAFE campuses. EFY Foyers achieve this through offering young people practical learning tools and skills, access to education, training and employment opportunities, safe and affordable accommodation for up to two years, coaching and 24 hour on-site support from trained staff, opportunities to develop independent living skills. EFY Foyers adopt an Open Talent approach. This approach works on the premise that all young people have talents and abilities, but that they do not all receive the same level of investment and support to develop these talents. Open Talent asserts that rather than investing in resources to ‘manage’ young people’s problems, the community needs to re-direct investment into building their abilities. Foyers invest in and nurture young people’s talents, through developing their skills and through providing access to resources and opportunities. In turn, they are able to build the necessary self-worth and self-confidence that can help motivate them to achieve their goals.

The Mentoring Program in the EFY Foyers’ aims to connect students with an interested and committed adult who can help them explore their personal and professional aspirations for the future and provide them with guidance, support and encouragement in a confidential, non-judgemental, respectful manner. Like coaches, mentors work with students through this exploration, which equips the mentee with the tools to replicate good relationships elsewhere: this is considered a major positive outcome in and of itself.
