Youth Employment Community Worker

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Pathways, you will be responsible for increasing both the opportunities and  access to education and employment for young people residing in the Miller area and those living in social housing. You will work collaboratively with young people, offering tailored support which will help an individual achieve education and/or employment outcomes. Integral to this role is the ability to work collaboratively at a high level with key community services and members to identify barriers precluding young people from achieving employment, training and housing outcomes. You will be responsible for assessing and coordinating client referrals and undertaking intake and assessment processes. You will develop, facilitate and deliver support and client-centred programs or workshops that contribute to young people’s success in employment, training, education and housing independence.

This is an 18 month fixed-term contract

The Right Person

You are highly-organised with strong communication skills and the ability to engage young people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. You will be proactive and client centric with a proven track record of working effectively with multiple stakeholders. You are able to establish priorities, plan a busy workload and maintain supportive ethical relationships while maintaining a positive attitude.

You are self-driven, highly organised and adaptable, with the ability to think on your feet and adjust to a dynamic environment. As part of a small team, you will be collaborative and professional in your approach and have the self-confidence to appropriately manage challenging situations with a calm approach.

Essential Selection Criteria

• Certificate IV or higher in social work, youth services, community services or a related field, complemented by experience and/or knowledge of the social and community housing sector;
• Strong case work/management experience and exposure to working with young people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in a community/placed based setting;
• Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of Child Protection legislation and issues affecting young people who are experiencing or have experienced Child Protection related matters;
• Demonstrated application of effective and appropriate communication skills at a high level, including written and verbal skills and the ability to listen, interpret and convey information. Experience in delivering workshops is desirable;
• Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organise own workload, establish priorities and work autonomously;
• High level of interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience in building and maintaining relevant stakeholder relationships;
• Proven track record working with multiple stakeholders in a community setting to delivering client centred outcomes;
• Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member and commitment to build a supportive and collaborative team culture;
• Proven understanding, respect and sensitivity towards cultural and social diversity and clients with complex needs, especially people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds or communities;
• Proficient level of experience in using and learning software applications (MS Office Word & Excel) and other office technology;
• Valid Police and Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain;
• Proven understanding of Child Protection legislation;
• Current driver licence with the right to drive in Australia
