About the organisation
Schizy Inc is a registered not for profit disability led arts organisation, operating from Melbourne. It was established in 2008 by Heidi Everett to address the chronic lack of meaningful arts outlets for people with ongoing and complex mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Its current membership is around 200 artists with lived experience, with a growing base of allies in arts industries and communities such as film, media, studios, galleries and local councils, plus mentors in governance and strategy. Schizy Inc. strives for personal and community pride and genuine connections with our global lived-experience neighbourhood, through the arts and nature-based programs. It appreciates genuine healing from complex post trauma-based realities like schizophrenia, comes from being creative, curious and courageous; and being around others doing the same. Schizy Inc acknowledges mental illness is a disability, aligning with the United Nations Convention of the Rights of People with Disability which puts society foremost in people’s capacity for full and enriched lives.
Schizy Inc. is planning to develop a rural base with a range of programs that will enable people to find pathways toward healing and personal development, in a supported and tranquil environment. Called a ‘healing farm’ it will grow, in addition to arts programs, to include animal care, horticulture, environmental experiences, education and training.
