About the organisation

Organisation Name : Partners in Aid Ltd

Partners in Aid is an Australian-based, not-for-profit, international development organisation involved with community development projects implemented locally by relatively small overseas NGOs. The organisation has been operating since 1962.  It currently supports projects in Sri Lanka, India and the Philippines. Our focus is on supporting projects that enable communities themselves to improve some aspect of their life, such as their health, environment or livelihood. Funding comes primarily from donors, the organisation of occasional fundraising functions and the submission of grants.

Partners in Aid is based in Melbourne, but as meetings are held by Zoom, Board members are drawn from around Australia.

In addition to the Board, Partners in Aid has a Project Working Group which includes some Board members and some non-members. The responsibilities of this Group include reviewing project proposals, overseas project partners' reports and Partners in Aid members' field visits, then reporting to the Board on these reviews as well as on any project-related issues which might arise.

About the role

Partners in Aid is seeking one or two Board Directors, and has a particular interest in recruiting someone who may be interested in undertaking the role of Board Chair in 2025,  or being mentored to assume this role in 2026.

The Partners in Aid Board seeks to ensure that our board membership reflects a range of skills relevant to both good governance and the effective operation of international projects. While anyone eager to contribute to a small organisation with a history of more than half a century of contributing to sustainable projects that lead to better lives and further communities’ capabilities is welcome to apply, we are currently particularly interested in applicants with expertise in preparing grant applications, business planning or IT (including managing SharePoint).. Experience with or qualifications in international development would be an advantage, but is not essential. Applicants interested in the role of chair must have had experience with an international development NGO with no paid staff.

To keep administrative costs down, Partners in Aid does not employ any staff. Accordingly, in addition to adopting a governance role, board members each nominate to undertake some operational responsibilities, such as meeting external compliance requirements, compiling our quarterly newsletter, supporting our IT infrastructure, etc. Generally, directors should expect to commit on average 5 hours a month to this work,  in addition to attending monthly meetings.

Joining the Partners in Aid Board provides the opportunity for someone to be simultaneously involved in governance and in hands-on decision-making relating to all stages of the project lifecycle.

Appointment is for three years, with the possibility of re-election.

If you would like further information, or to discuss your suitability, please contact Dan Pagoda (chair) by email at info@partnersinaid.org.au  or Dr Cecily Neil (immediate past chair) on (o3)9682 3992.
