The Organisation

First Peoples with disability and their families are amongst the most seriously disadvantaged and disempowered members of the Australian community. Governed by First Peoples with lived experience of disability, the First Peoples Disability Network Australia (FPDN) is an organisation of and for Australia’s First Peoples, their families, and communities.
  
FPDN proactively engages with communities around Australia and individuals internationally, advocating for the recognition, respect, protection and fulfilment of their human rights. Established informally in 2010, the founders are the leaders of the Aboriginal disability movement who have been working to uphold the rights of their people since the 1960s.

The Role

FPDN is increasing its engagements with communities across Australia to ensure First Nations people with disability know their disability rights and have access to a community-controlled sector that is culturally safe, inclusive and disability rights informed. These projects are part of FPDN’s National Disability Footprint Program.

As part of the Disability Footprint Program, you will play an integral role in developing on going relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations utilising accessible sector-based resources, communications standards and guidelines to strengthen engagement with people with disability and understanding of their needs in policy development. 
Specifically you will:

  • Develop community campaigns to raise awareness and support for important issues
  • Identify accessible communication gaps across members and the broader disability sector
  • Develop accessible content, resources and materials to communicate key messaging
  • Capture incoming communications to identify and address a range of sector needs

Skills Required

You have experience working in a community engagement or communications role within an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisation and possess a passion for social change. You have gained skills in developing accessible content, resources and materials for a range of audiences. 
  
You bring knowledge, respect and support for the cultural values and practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples together, ideally with understanding of the disability sector and the related challenges in accessing information and support.
  
In addition to well-developed time and project management skills and ability to work with multiple communication deliverables, you have experience producing impactful campaigns and content ideally for Aboriginal and/or First Nations Communities.
  
Having lived experience of a disability would be desirable.
