THNSW operates the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere and the Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum in the Blue Mountains, while also delivering vibrant heritage rail journeys and transport events across NSW.

We proudly partner with local community-based and volunteer heritage transport organisations throughout NSW and the ACT, helping keep our shared transport history alive.

About the role

About the role

Are you an experienced and values-driven leader ready to play a key role in the future sustainability of NSW’s transport heritage? Join THNSW as our Head of Finance & Corporate Resources, a strategic and hands-on leadership position responsible for driving excellence across financial management, corporate governance, ICT, risk management and business planning.

As part of the senior management team and reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll provide trusted advice and leadership across all corporate functions, guiding our financial performance, annual planning, and reporting, while fostering a culture of integrity, continuous improvement and service. You’ll also lead the Finance & Corporate Resources team, supporting the broader organisation to operate efficiently, compliantly and sustainably.

In this diverse and influential role, you will:

  • Lead the annual business planning, budgeting, and performance monitoring process.
  • Provide strategic advice, analysis and high-level reporting to the CEO, Board and Government stakeholders.
  • Oversee financial operations, audit and compliance obligations, ensuring transparency, accountability and accuracy across all financial and business activities.
  • Lead the Finance & Corporate Resources team and manage third-party service providers in ICT, insurance, payroll and other business support functions.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in THNSW’s systems, processes and reporting.
  • Partner across the organisation to build capability, strengthen culture and support effective decision-making aligned with THNSW’s strategic objectives.

Based in our Sydney or Thirlmere offices (with flexibility and occasional travel across NSW), this role offers a unique opportunity to combine strategic influence with hands-on impact in a purpose-driven organisation.

If you’re a proactive, detail-focused leader who thrives in dynamic, collaborative environments and takes pride in helping organisations operate at their best, this role is for you.

About you

You’re an accomplished finance and corporate services professional with a strong general management background and a track record of success in senior leadership roles. You’re comfortable navigating complexity, leading people, and partnering across boundaries to deliver results.

You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy working strategically and operationally, and can balance governance, compliance and innovation with a practical “can-do” attitude.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, finance, business or a related field.
  • Significant experience in senior financial and/or corporate management, ideally within a complex organisation ($10M+ turnover).
  • Proven experience in business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance monitoring.
  • Strong governance, risk and compliance knowledge — including experience managing audits, contracts and external reporting.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire, influence and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving abilities, with outstanding attention to detail and time management.

Membership of a relevant professional body (such as CPA, CA or other), and/or experience working within a not-for-profit, heritage, tourism or government context will be highly regarded.

Above all, you’re a team player and trusted advisor who leads with integrity, fosters collaboration, and is motivated by contributing to a meaningful cause.

Why join us?

At THNSW, you’ll be part of a passionate and inclusive organisation that values integrity, teamwork, and continuous improvement. You’ll join a small, dedicated leadership team working across all areas of the business — from heritage operations and community outreach to governance and long-term planning.

You’ll have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the future of NSW’s transport heritage while contributing to an organisation that is both mission-driven and forward-thinking.

We offer flexible work arrangements, professional development opportunities, and a genuinely supportive culture built on collaboration and respect.
