The Department of Health and Human Services is looking to appoint a new Chief Preventive Health Officer (CPHO) to lead the 70 strong, Prevention, Population Health and Place Branch, aimed at the prevention of illness and the promotion of wellbeing. The role will be responsible for the management and delivery of primary preventative health, screening and early detection programs; the implementation of a broader government health and wellbeing plan and the embedding of health and wellbeing prevention as core business for the Department and across government. The Vulnerable Children’s Reform Unit and the Placed Based Strategy Unit will also report to the CPHO.

 
The role combines thought leadership, program management, stakeholder engagement, policy development and innovation and requires extensive engagement with a wide range of stakeholders at local, state and national level including peak bodies, government representatives and health and community organisations.

 
Candidates wanting to be considered for the opportunity will need attributes including:

  • Proven senior professional experience in prevention and population health including health promotion policies, strategies and programs;
  • A clear understanding of social determinants of health and wellbeing and the role of research in evidence based prevention strategies;
  • High level leadership skills with experience in strategic planning and policy development combined with sophisticated influencing and negotiation skills;
  • An outcomes focus with a track record in building effective relationships with a wide array of stakeholders.
