The cohealth AOD Response team, consisting of AOD North and West, is a specialist AOD primary health service, providing holistic health and harm reduction services to people who use drugs (PWUD). Three teams operate from the Northern site: harm reduction, primary care and AOD counselling.

AOD Response North offers a medical practice as well as nursing and allied health, counselling and Needle & Syringe Program (NSP), and a drop-in service that is staffed by community health workers.

The role of the Community Health Worker is to deliver effective, friendly and efficient services to clients by:

  • Providing engagement and support, including advocacy and liaison
  • Providing information and referral to appropriate services both within cohealth and externally
  • Working to facilitate the delivery of pharmacotherapies in collaboration with GPs and other service providers
  • Promoting health and risk reducing behaviours amongst PWUD
  • NSP duties as required at sites across cohealth
  • Working with PWUD in a sensitive, confidential and non-judgmental manner.

To be successful for this role you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. AOD, community development, social work) Certificate IV or higher, with minimum two years relevant work experience.
  • The ability to engage with service users in a warm, non-judgemental manner, demonstrate a strong customer service focussed approach and where appropriate engage the client in harm reduction brief interventions, education and/or information and referral
  • Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction as it applies to people who use drugs (PWUD), including the transmission and prevention of blood borne viruses (Hepatitis B and C, HIV and STIs). Demonstrated commitment to the principles of harm reduction and the ability to translate them into practical strategies
  • The ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively to achieve quality outcomes in a busy, client-focussed environment.
  • Lived experience is highly regarded.
