City West Housing is a not for profit community housing provider.

In 1994, the NSW Government established City West Housing (CWH) as an independent not for profit housing provider with a focus on developing and delivering affordable rental housing as part of a mixed residential community in the Ultimo/Pyrmont area for people on very low to moderate incomes. As a result of its initial success, CWH now operates across the whole of the City of Sydney.

Today, CWH owns and manages over 720 affordable rental properties in the City of Sydney for households on very low to moderate incomes. A further 174 properties will be ready for tenancy by late 2019

CWH is recognised for its commitment to service delivery, its strong development capability and its contribution to the diversity and sustainability of the City of Sydney.

About the role

Role of directors

As a Board member, you will be responsible for supporting CWH to develop and oversee implementation of the strategic plan.

CWH is a proprietary limited company. Board members need to meet all statutory obligations of company directors. This requires a good working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a company director and of the Board generally. The Board delegates all management responsibilities to the Chief Executive Officer, who has wide management authority, which is limited and guided by the organisation’s policies, the Board and sub-committees of the Board.

Composition

The Board currently comprises five external voting members including the Chair.

 Time commitment

In applying for this position, it is important to consider whether you have the capacity in terms of time commitment to fulfil the requirements of the role.

There is a minimum of six (6) standard scheduled Board of Directors meetings per annum in Sydney. Plus two half day Strategy Planning meetings, approximately four (4) Sub-Committee Meetings and the AGM.

The successful candidates will be required to join either the Community Engagement & Tenancy Committee or the Development & Asset Management Committee. Successful candidates will also need to be a willing team player, with the time and energy required to fully and thoughtfully commit to their role for a term of three years.

All new directors receive an orientation to CWH upon commencement of their initial term.

 Remuneration

The remuneration is $15,000 per annum, paid on a quarterly basis, plus reasonable expenses.

 Applying for Directorship

Board Directors are expected to have the following core attributes:

  • Experience or awareness of board director role
  • Experience and knowledge of organisational strategy
  • Strong financial literacy
  • Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal, relationship building, and problems solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Understanding of and commitment to social and affordable housing
  • Understanding of the not-for-profit sector

To ensure a range of skills and diversity in our board, we are seeking people with one or more of the following attributes:

  • Experience in social and affordable housing sector
  • Experience in community services sector
  • Experience in housing development and procurement
  • Experience in investment finance or accounting

 Desirable criteria

  • Completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors course

 

As part of the screening process candidates will be required to complete a satisfactory National Police Check and verification of qualifications.
