About the role

Summary of program and its objectives:

Local Area Coordination (LAC) is a pivotal function in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The role of LAC is to:

  • link people to the NDIS – this means helping participants to access and plan under the NDIS, find providers and community networks and linkages
  • link people with disability, their families and carers to information and support in the community – this means that LAC is a doorway that any person with disability, their families and carers can walk into to get a better understanding of what is available in their community
  • work with their local community to make sure it is more welcoming and inclusive for people with disability – this means helping local communities to develop their understanding of people with disability, their needs and how they might be able to work together at all levels to achieve a better outcome.

Main responsibilities of the role:

Senior Local Area Coordinators are team leaders responsible for overseeing a team of Local Area Coordinators. Senior LACs serve as subject matter and practice experts in one or more areas of disability. In addition to supervising a team, Senior LACs are expert advisors who mentor LACs across the department on best practice and developments in their area of expertise to ensure that the Brotherhood delivers a high quality service.

Senior LACs maintain a caseload, working with people with disability to advocate, plan, organise and access the support and services needed to live an ordinary life. This includes assessing each person’s eligibility for NDIS and (where eligible) helping to establish NDIS plans with reasonable and necessary supports. Senior Local Area Coordinators also build community capacity and assist people with disability to access mainstream services regardless of NDIS eligibility.

To meet the selection criteria, candidates will require:

Essential

  • relevant qualifications in allied health, disability services, education, human services, community development, social work or other qualification in line with the responsibilities of the position
  • professional experience in role related to disability service provision OR  Demonstrated experience in community development
