About the organisation
Headquartered in Sydney, Caritas Australia is the Catholic agency for international humanitarian aid and development in Australia. Beginning in Australia in 1964, it is part of a global network that spans over 200 countries and territories. Caritas is Latin for love + compassion – two qualities which are central to its work.
Staff are located throughout Australia (approx. 85) and in seven other countries – Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Kenya, Indonesia and Myanmar. Income in 2017-2018 was approximately $40 million, of which over $28 million was raised through donations. The other main source of funding is received via the federal government Department of Foreign Affairs.
Caritas helps the poorest of the poor. Its approach is based on Catholic Social Teaching which is part of the discipline of applied moral theology and draws on all four major sources of insight used in Catholic ethics: scripture, reason, tradition and experience. A commitment to the Catholic faith is therefore integral to this role.
Caritas Australia is governed by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) Bishops Commission for Social Justice – Mission and Service (BCSJ) with the assistance of a highly engaged National Council of Caritas Australia.
About the role
The primary responsibilities of the position are to:
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to Caritas Australia, by overseeing the implementation of the strategic directions of Caritas Australia adopted by the National Council.
- Promote the mission of Caritas Australia by acting as the international and national voice of Caritas Australia at community, state and national levels as well as through the international aid and development networks of the Catholic Church.
- Shape public policy through developing and maintaining high level networks and relationships with Church leaders and religious orders, and within government, think tanks, universities, the NGO community, and other international organisations.
- Manage the operations of the Agency including growth, effectiveness, legislative compliance and fulfilment of mission.
