Our Counselling Service delivers a therapeutic service to residents in the western suburbs of Melbourne with a focus on marginalised communities. This role, embedded within the Refugee Health Team, provides counselling in trauma, family violence, depression and anxiety, with a particular focus on marginalised and/or refugee communities.

This role provides a crucial response to the psycho-social/mental health needs of cohealth clients in collaboration with other cohealth services. Counselling duties are the primary focus however the position may also include intake, casework, care-planning, group work and health promotion.

Your daily duties will be diverse however, in essence will include:

  • Providing ethical, flexible, professional goal-directed and client-centred counselling services, to a range of individuals and families within a systems approach;
  • Provide a culturally safe, trauma informed counselling service for people from refugee and asylum seeker background and a generalist client case load
  • Providing casework, referral and advocacy to clients particularly where this would enhance the therapeutic work and/or where other services are not available;
  • Working with other professionals in an inter-professional approach within the refugee health team; and
  • Ensuring all reporting, record keeping, data management and other administrative duties are done in a timely fashion;

Being a councillor, you’re already a compassionate, caring individual by definition. You wouldn’t have a career if that weren’t the case. What else you can bring to the role is;

  • A qualification in counselling and/or social work, eligibility for membership of AASW and more than two years supervised experience providing counselling;
  • Well developed capacity for counselling assessment and formulation towards client centred care planning;
  • Demonstrated capacity to conduct family violence risk assessment, mental health risk assessment and safety planning;
  • A sensitivity to, and understanding of, the needs of clients from diverse backgrounds;
  • Personal attributes including flexibility, initiative, professionalism, integrity, a focus on positive outcomes, and the ability to self-regulate during difficult situations;
  • An understanding of the family violence, mental health and child protection sector and/or specialist training/skills in working with women and children who have experienced family violence (highly desirable); and
  • Relevant second language, desirable.
