About the organisation

Organisation Name : Bangarra Dance Theatre via People for Purpose

Bangarra Dance Theatre is one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies and the only Major Performing Arts organisation with its cultural origins in the land. Bangarra is widely acclaimed nationally and around the world for its powerful dance language and distinctive theatrical voice. The company delivers a diverse annual regional, national and international touring program, which is complemented by an extensive program of community, youth and education workshops and initiatives. Since inception, and particularly during the last five years, Bangarra has grown in its reach and strengthened its engagement within communities, and with both national and international audiences.

About the role

  • Build on a solid foundation and established reputation
  • Use your strategic acumen to ensure long term sustainability
  • Support the organisation to create inspiring experiences that change society

The Board are looking to appoint an Executive Director to work in partnership with the Artistic Director, to provide strategic leadership to support the delivery of the artistic vision, and to ensure Bangarra’s next chapter leverages the artistic and operational success that its strong reputation has been built on.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, capable of engaging individuals at all levels and will continue to strengthen the organisation’s public profile and reach. Candidates should demonstrate creative commercial acumen that would ensure the organisation’s solid financial position is maintained and strengthened. Measuring and reporting on activity and impact will be key as your team, business and impact grow.

The Executive Director will have a high emotional intelligence and a leadership style informed by the values of the Wiradjuri concept of Yindyamarra – to act with honour, respect, graciousness and mindfulness. You will build a strong, inclusive team culture, within which there is role clarity and accountability, and which supports the autonomy and flexibility required for creative success.  You must have the presence, intellect and influence to accelerate this important work.

As Executive Director, you will also demonstrate a genuine commitment to providing a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to strive for creative excellence, and to acknowledge and share stories from Country. Your desire to create impact culturally will be carefully balanced with your ability to continue to strengthen Bangarra financially and operationally.

Bangarra is a place of reconciliation where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people work alongside people of many diverse backgrounds, in a safe and respectful environment. You will excel at building relationships with a diverse group of external stakeholders, from Elders and creatives, to audience members, government partners, national and international venue partners, donors and corporate partners. Critical to your success will be your ability to respect and appreciate that Bangarra are custodians of culture and the responsibility that this entails.
