About the organisation

Organisation Name : Doctors for the Environment Australia

Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) is Australia’s leading health organisation educating on and advocating against environmental damage that threatens human health with a focus on climate change. Our members are medical doctors and students, from all branches of medicine who are deeply concerned about climate change, loss of biodiversity, sustainable health systems and the importance of clean air and water. Their efforts to influence Australia’s environmental policies are supported by a national Scientific Advisory Committee which includes some of Australia’s most distinguished doctors and scientists.  DEA is an independent, self-funded non-government organisation with activities in all Australian states and territories. DEA is a registered environmental charity with deductible gift recipient status.

About the role

Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) is seeking a dynamic, experienced Executive Director (ED) to drive the next phase of development in pursuit of its Mission, “Protecting health through care of the environment”. DEA is a health organisation run by volunteer doctors, whose activities are supported by an administrative officer and communications and media manager. DEA is rapidly expanding its membership and influence, in response to the growing impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on human health.

The successful candidate will have experience in leading transformational change and be well equipped to direct expansion of DEA’s influence through research, media exposure, education, campaigning and lobbying of decision-makers on the health impacts of global warming and environmental degradation.

The new ED will lead activities to increase DEA’s capacity, including campaigning to amplify DEA’s messages, and establishing a systematic fundraising program. Another priority will be to develop the membership to a wider network of engaged medical professionals, enabling them to give their time (for campaigns and advocacy) and resources. He or she will have experience working with high-level volunteers such as doctors.

Ideally the new ED will have experience in leading small-medium organisations, preferably from the health and/or environment sectors and have a good working knowledge of the policy issues in one or both of these areas.

Conditions: 0.8 – 1.0 Full-time equivalent (negotiable).
Contract: 12 months – with possibility to extend in this growing organisation.
