About the organisation

Organisation Name : SMART Recovery Australia

The organisation is a company limited by guarantee and registered as a health promotion charity.

The vision of SMART Recovery Australia is to make SMART Recovery accessible and relevant to all people in Australia. Our purpose is to empower Australians with practical skills, tools and support to manage addictive behaviour. SMART Recovery Australia helps people help each other to manage addictive behaviours for the improvement of the health and social wellbeing of the community. The program is informed by research evidence.

SMART Recovery Australia coordinates approximately 350 SMART Recovery groups face-to-face and online throughout Australia and New Zealand. The number of groups has doubled in two years. The organisation has been through a steady growth and increasing professionalism over the last few years. Increasing public awareness and acquiring sufficient funds to sustain the growth are key current priorities. We conduct face to face and on-line training programs and are leaders in evidence based research to combat problematic behaviours.

SMART Recovery is a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based program for people dealing with addictive behaviour. It is delivered in a mutual aid group setting. SMART Recovery is a Self-Management and Recovery Training organisation. SMART Recovery groups are facilitated by both professionals and peers (people recovering from addictive behaviours).

About SMART Recovery Internationally

SMART Recovery commenced in the United States of America in 1994. There are now approximately 3,000 group meetings in over 20 countries in the world. SMART Recovery Australia is a founding member of SMART Recovery International, established in 2018.

About the role

As part of its succession planning SMART Recovery Australia (SRAU) will appoint new non-executive directors and a new Chair to replace those who are retiring over the next 12 months.

You will be joining a talented and committed Board at an exciting time. SRAU has been fortunate to have been awarded a Commonwealth grant to support the expansion of its online activities. This is a great opportunity to expand the activities already identified in its Strategic plan. The program activities offered by SMART Recovery Australia are particularly key for the community as it adjusts to the stresses that new ways of interacting have brought about. We are keen to ensure that our free services are well known in the community and among other alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and mental health service providers.

These voluntary roles will attract people from across Australia who are keen to use their strong values and commitment to support addiction and mental health issues being addressed through a strengths based and harm minimisation approach.

We want Non-Executive Directors that are willing to use their own capacity and that of their networks to deliver the strategic aims of the organisation. Directors with skills and experience in digital growth and Multichannel Engagement will particularly complement the current skills mix on the Board but those with other relevant experience and qualifications, including legal and human resources are also encouraged to apply. The Chair of the organisation will have a critical role as a principal spokesperson and advocate for the organisation. All directors need to be interested in supporting the sustainable growth of the organisation. Knowledge of, or access to the AOD & mental health fields, broader health sector, business or Government is an advantage. All directors have governance responsibilities and experience or training such as through the Graduate membership of AICD is an advantage.

The SMART Recovery Australia Board focusses on the strategic oversight of the organisation and is not a management Board. The individual skills of individual Directors may be utilised from time-to-time by the organisation, separate to their role on the SMART Recovery Australia Board.

Commitment Involved

Board meetings are held every two months for no more two hours. These can be attended in person or online. Your overall time commitment is estimated at six to eight hours per month. There is an annual staff and Board planning day you would be expected to attend. Membership of a subcommittee may also be required. The SMART Recovery Australia office is in Pyrmont Sydney.
