The Children’s Court of Victoria (ChCV) has jurisdiction under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 to hear cases involving children and young people up to the age of 18 years, and in some cases up to 19 years. It has a Family Division and a Criminal Division, and it sits at locations throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

About the role:

The Family Violence Practitioner is required to work closely with the Court Support Coordinators and other court-based support services to enhance the overall experience for those individuals attending the Melbourne Children’s Court for family violence related proceedings.

The primary focus of the role is not case management but rather the provision of information and support to court users impacted by family violence to assist them to navigate the court process, understand the conditions of court orders and remain safe whilst in the court precinct.

The Family Violence Practitioner is also responsible for facilitating warm referrals to specialist services to meet the needs of the client and works closely with the network of Family Violence Practitioners in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria to represent the needs of the ChCV as well as promote consistency in practice for those individuals impacted by family violence and actively engaged in both jurisdictions.

About you:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working with individuals and families impacted by family violence and possess a comprehensive understanding of the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM) as well as information sharing obligations and expectations for family violence practitioners under the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme.

Working within a highly sensitive and demanding environment, the successful candidate will possess excellent teamwork skills and the ability to develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, court staff and the judiciary to advocate and prioritise the immediate safety and non-legal needs of court users both experiencing and using violence in the home.
