About the organisation

Organisation Name : Australia Writers' Guild via People for Purpose

Established more than 50 years ago, The Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG or The Guild) is the professional association for Australian performance writers principally in film, television, theatre, radio and digital media.

The AWG’s primary purpose is to fight to improve professional standards, conditions and remuneration for Australian stage and screen writers; to protect and advance their creative rights; and to promote the role and recognition of performance writing in Australian society and culture. Through its work, the Guild also promotes the Australian cultural voice in all its diversity.

The Guild has achieved many domestic successes and continues to work to ensure Australian writers are given the support they need to succeed in the global marketplace.

The Guild is run by its members. A twelve-person National Executive Council sets broad policy and strategic direction for the Guild. It is served by a National Office in Sydney, managed by the Executive Director, with five separate State Committees across Australia.

About the role

  • Lead a team working to support their writer members.
  • Use your professional management, strategic and advocacy skills.
  • Promote the diversity of our stage, screen, & digital performances.

Are you a skilled leader and advocate, a resourceful and dynamic big thinker, eager to boost the profile and rights of Australian performance writers?

As well as managing the National Office, the Executive Director draws on the experience of the board and member committees across Australia. As a proactive organisation, the Executive Director approaches work with focus, energy and commitment. This is a demanding position, which requires a passion to defend and advance the interests of Guild members.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Success in this role involves:

  • Senior executive experience, with experience in building and maintaining a membership or other supporter-based organisation preferred. Industry body or union also desirable.
  • An experienced and fearless advocate, lobbyist, and negotiator; able to – both firmly or gently – engage and influence a variety of stakeholders both within and outside of the organisation.
  • Understanding of Governance – experience in working with a board, with a demonstrated ability to develop and execute on strategy.
  • The ability to inspire and mobilise a capable team and instill a commitment to achieve strategic goals and continuous improvement in meeting member’s needs.
  • Experience in financial oversight and management to ensure short term financial health and long-term sustainability.
  • Experience and understanding of working with multiple stakeholders e.g. the various performance writer groups, Government, Government agencies, industry bodies etc.
  • Skills in policy – able to develop and implement policies, in particular managing industrial policies and, where necessary, directly leading industrial negotiations.
  • The ability to work with funding bodies and understand where and how finances flow within them – this could be within the performance space and the Australian performance industry or by transferring those skills from within other sectors.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and authentically – to deliver the organisation’s message and engage with stakeholders both within and outside the organisation via a variety of forums.
  • Passion to promote Australian creativity through championing the status, improved remuneration and rights of Australian performance writers.
