ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

SANE is a company limited by guarantee, and a registered charity with offices in Melbourne and Sydney. Our mission is to make a real difference in the lives of people and families with complex mental health needs. The Dax Centre is part of SANE group and operates with a mirror board.

 

The role of the Board is to govern and provide overall strategic guidance for SANE Australia and effective oversight of its mission. This includes oversight of SANE Australia’s five year (2022-2027) strategy.

 

SANE’s Board is a skills-mix board, and a vacancy has arisen for a new director to contribute to our strategic vision as a Non-Executive Director of SANE Australia and The Dax Centre. The Board is seeking nominations from individuals with the skill sets outlined below.

We are seeking a Non-Executive Director who displays integrity, independence and ethics and is collaborative, curious and courageous.  Emotional intelligence, commercial judgement and business acumen are highly valued as is being an active contributor with a strong commitment to the SANE vision, mission, purpose, and values.

 

  • Board meetings are held during business hours, six times per year.
  • Board subcommittees meet quarterly.
  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position
  • Travel and other agreed expenses are covered by SANE Australia

 

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA 

  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the below priority areas (essential)
    • Lived Experience of complex mental health issues or experience as a family member/support person of someone with complex mental health issues – High Priority
    • Mental Health Clinical Experience – High Priority
    • Being of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse or First Nations community, or experience working with these communities – High Priority
    • Arts/Arts Institutions Management – Medium Priority
    • Business/Commercial Expertise – Medium Priority
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director, including an understanding of the legal, ethical, fiduciary, and financial responsibilities of Board members.
  • Experience as a Board Director or completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Company Directors Course or other related education

 

HIGHLY DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

  • Strategic expertise – the ability to review the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision making of the board.
  • Accounting and finance – the ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the board
  • Risk Management – experience in managing areas of major risk management for the organisation
  • Legal expertise – the board’s responsibility involves overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding the individual director’s legal duties and responsibilities.
  • Industry knowledge – experience in similar organisations or industries.
  • A passion and strong interest in mental health
  • Expertise in improving cultural diversity
  • Media, marketing, brand, and communications expertise
  • Professional expertise in mental health support or services
  • Lived experience advocacy, research or professional expertise in intellectual, cognitive disability or autism
  • Expertise in Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing

 

All successful applicants will be required to undergo a Police Check as a part of becoming a SANE Australia Board director.
