About the organisation

Organisation Name : The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO)

Founded by Paul Grabowsky AO in 1994 and led by Peter Knight from 2013-2022, the AAO is one of Australia’s leading contemporary ensembles. Now led by the artistically fearless Aaron Choulai, its work constantly seeks to stretch genres and break down the barriers separating disciplines, forms and cultures. It explores the interstices between the avant-garde and the traditional, between art and popular music, between electronic and acoustic approaches, and creates music that traverse the continuum between improvised and notated forms.

About the role

The Australian Art Orchestra seeks a new Executive Director, creating the rare opportunity for a unique individual to work closely with newly appointed Artistic Director, Aaron Choulai. The opportunity to become AAO Executive Director comes at an exciting moment of renewal and growth for the organisation. Together, the Artistic Director & the Executive Director will shape the future direction of the AAO.

An Information Pack can be found on the AAO website.

Working together with Artistic Director, the Executive Director is actively involved both in the shaping and building of strategic initiatives as well as leading the delivery and promotion of the artistic program and managing the organisation’s day-to-day operations. The organisation has a mix of funding sources, notably multiyear funding from the Australia Council for the Arts (2021 – 2024), Creative Victoria (2022 – 2025), earned income and the private sector.

The AAO follows a shared leadership model, with the Artistic Director and the Executive Director functioning as co-CEOs, working closely together but accountable for discrete areas of work. The Executive Director is responsible for managing and developing relationships with government funding bodies, foundations and donors, and raising funds from both government and private sources. The Executive Director is also charged with establishing and maintaining operational systems and processes.
