About the organisation

Organisation Name : Thorne Harbour Health

Thorne Harbour Health is a community-controlled LGBTI organisation, governed by our members, and working for our sex, sexuality and gender diverse communities.

For 35 years as the Victorian AIDS Council (VAC), the organisation led the Victorian community’s response to HIV and AIDS.   Our work has now moved beyond Victoria and Thorne Harbour Health is responding to a broad range issues.  Thorne Harbour Health aims to improve the health, social and emotional well-being of LGBTI communities and those living with or affected by HIV, with a particular emphasis on bringing the HIV and AIDS epidemic to an end.

In 2015, Thorne Harbour Health partnered with SHINE SA to create South Australian Mobilisation Empowerment for Sexual Health (SAMESH), a community-based support service providing education, training and advocacy of sexual health and HIV.

Thorne Harbour Health has been providing AOD Services in Victoria since 2014 and in 2021 successfully tendered to provide AOD services to the LGBTIQ+ community in South Australia.

About the role

Thorne Harbour Health, Victoria’s largest provider of LGBTIQ+ health services delivers Alcohol and Other Drug treatment and support services to the LGBTIQ+ community in South Australia, operating from The Cottage in Woodville.

We are looking for an appropriately qualified and experienced counsellor to join our small Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) team to provide evidence-based counselling interventions to community members experiencing problematic substance use.

As an AOD counsellor, you will work within a harm reduction and trauma-informed framework, using a range of approaches, including brief interventions, counselling, group work, and collaborative treatment planning. As part of a recently established program you will also help to embed the service within the broader SA service sector.

Knowledge of HIV, hep C and sexual health is desirable, as is an LGBTIQ+ affirmative stance and a genuine interest in meeting the health and well-being needs of our diverse community. Previous experience in AOD counselling and group work will be highly regarded.

Thorne Harbour Health offers a supportive team environment, regular clinical supervision, ongoing professional development opportunities and the opportunity to further develop your skills in working from an LGBTIQ+ affirming and sex positive framework.
