About the role

  • Future ongoing and temporary full-time opportunity. 35 hours per week.
  • Location: Wollongong, Sydney, Parramatta or Gosford

  • Clerk Grade 7/8. Base salary $106,025 p.a. to $117,363 p.a. plus superannuation and annual leave loading.

 

About the team

The Public Guardian can be appointed by a court or tribunal to make health and lifestyle decisions for people who are unable to on their own, or with support. These include decisions such as where a person might live, their medical and dental treatment, health care, and other services. It also provides information and support to private and enduring guardians, service providers and the wider community.

 

About the role

Our Principal Guardians work to uphold the human rights of the people we represent through decision making and advocacy with the aim of achieving the best outcome available. In this role, you will work with a range of people we represent who have a variety of needs and at times complex situations.  As a Principal Guardian, you will be involved in matters where there may be family conflict, divergent opinions as to the person’s well-being or conflicts of interests about what should occur.  

The role is responsible for the coaching and mentoring of senior guardians & guardians and providing advice for more complex cases. You will be responsible for developing and implementing decisions for represented people, including preparing reports and recommendations to a variety of audiences.

This role requires you to participate up to four times a year in an after-hours weekly roster. The roster includes being on call on a weekend: Friday 5.00pm-Monday 9.00 am as well as weekdays Monday-Friday 5.00 pm-9.00 am.

About you

Application is encouraged if you have:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective engagement and the ability to adapt your communication for a range of needs
  • A positive attitude with the ability to manage a caseload
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
  • A self-starter who can work both collaboratively and independently
  • Strong leadership skills to mentor, coach and support staff
  • A good understanding of relevant legislation: Guardianship Act 1987 (NSW), the Mental Health Act 2007 (NSW), the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (Cth) and the Aged Care Act 1997 (Cth)

Essential requirements  

  • Degree or the equivalent experience in social, health, behavioural sciences or relevant experience.
  • Available to travel throughout NSW and to undertake after hours work on a rotational basis.
