About the role

Big Group Hug is seeking nominations from suitably qualified and experienced people to fill the position of Board Chair. The suitable candidate would be a passionate and dedicated advocate to lead the board through this exciting and challenging time in our history.  The organisation is going through a period of rapid growth and is replicating its services in other geographical areas with additional programs and offerings for families and children being developed. We are also happy to accept expressions of interest for general board members at this time as well.

About the Big Group Hug Board
The Board currently comprises 5 members excluding the Chair and Company Secretary. Under its current Constitution:
4.PURPOSE OF COMPANYThe objects for which the Company is established are:
4.1 to provide benevolent relief through the provision of material aid for vulnerable children and disadvantaged families to relieve poverty or distress (such as sickness, disability, destitution, suffering, misfortune or helplessness);
4.2 to collect and distribute essential material aid to vulnerable children and disadvantaged families that are unable to provide or access sufficient basic requirements such as infant food, clothing, books and toys as a result of situational poverty or distress;
4.3 to galvanise and mobilise local community support to match identified essential needs and material aid gaps for vulnerable children and disadvantaged families until such time as existing social support service agencies can meet the level and scope of material needs required;
4.4 to create new local volunteer support groups in a range of disadvantaged communities to enable the collection and distribution of essential material aid to vulnerable children and disadvantaged families that are unable to provide or access sufficient basic requirements in their local areas;
4.5 to provide the Company’s service free to appropriate maternal and child health workers, social service agencies, refuges and hospital social workers; and
4.6 to encourage the local communities to donate time or funds to support the operational distribution of goods in their local area.
 
Chair Responsibilities
The Chair is responsible for leadership of the Big Group Hug Board. The chair acts as an important link between the Board and the management of Big Group Hug via the CEO. The Chair will need to lead the Board through its current growth phase and will be required to implement a skills-based board to achieve the growth.
Responsibilities of the chair include:
  • Facilitating the effective functioning of the Board including managing the conduct, frequency, and length of Board meetings, and facilitating proper information flow to the Board
  • Communicating the views of the Board, in conjunction with the CEO, to the organisation’s stakeholders and to the public
  • Management of the CEO including evaluating the CEO’s performance
  • Establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with the CEO as the primary contact between the Board and management
  • In consultation with the CEO:
    • setting the agenda for the matters to be considered by the Board
  • Seeking to ensure that the information provided to the Board is relevant, accurate, timely and keeps the Board appropriately informed of the performance of the organisation and  of any developments that may have a material impact on the organisation or its performance
  • Seeking to ensure that communications with stakeholders and the public are accurate and effective
  • Leading the Board, including
    • Setting the tone for the Board, including the establishment of a common purpose and culture
    • Chairing Board meetings efficiently
    • Encouraging contributions from all Board members and seeking consensus when making decisions
  • Overseeing and facilitating Board, committee and Board member evaluation reviews and succession planning, including:
    • Motivating, Counselling and dealing with under performance of board members where necessary
    • Board member appraisals
    • Managing the selection of Board members with the support of the CEO
  • Communicating with stakeholders and members on behalf of the Board and on matters of corporate governance

Big Group Hug is a not-for-profit public company limited by guarantee which is established to be, and to continue as, a charity. It is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organisation founded in 2014. Currently based in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Big Group Hug supports vulnerable and disadvantaged families in need, by providing new and pre-loved goods to help these families care for their children, aged from newborn to 16-year-old.

Our core belief is that all children deserve the best start in life, so for us, the child is the focus of everything we do. Our team is made up of over 300 individuals/volunteers who are determined and committed to assisting every family who asks for help.We also strongly believe in building a sustainable future by promoting the upcycling, recycling and rehoming of preloved items to reduce landfill and the environmental damage caused by waste.
