About the organisation

Organisation Name : Women's Property Initiatives
Women’s Property Initiatives (WPI) is a not-for-profit, registered charity that develops and provides affordable long-term housing to vulnerable single women and single women with children. We currently accommodate over 200 women and children in 83 properties in Melbourne and we will be adding 10 new properties to our portfolio by the end of June 2019. We work with the private, public and non-government sectors to develop our housing which is rented at no more than 75% of the market rate or 30% of household income. WPI believes that single women and single mothers face significant disadvantage when it comes to employment opportunities, ability to work and income. They often have the greatest need for safe, affordable long-term housing. We seek to provide them with this housing as a foundation for a better life and a secure future for their children. Many of our beneficiaries are women who have experienced domestic violence, whilst others are from culturally diverse backgrounds or are leaving the correctional system. All of these women were vulnerable and needed understanding. Without WPI they faced great risk of homelessness. Obtaining safe, long term housing has had a very profound effect on the lives of these women and their families. Many have said that they really don’t want to think about where they would be without the assistance of WPI. In 2015 we launched our social enterprise, Property Initiatives Real Estate (PIRE), to provide comprehensive residential sales and property management services across inner-Melbourne. All of the profits from PIRE go directly to WIP to continue to build housing for disadvantaged women. However, there are never enough houses, and we have over 130 women on our waiting list who are desperate to change their lives with a stable home. Our goal is to help many more women avoid homelessness and poverty. We have independent research to suggest that every dollar invested in our housing delivers more than eleven dollars of social and economic value. This takes into account things like a positive impact on well-being and self-esteem that leads to improved mental health, employment readiness and better educational and health outcomes. These flow-on benefits have a very real impact on the social engagement of these individuals and lead to the lowering of costs to our communities.
