Asylum Seekers Centre (NSW) is a not-for-profit, charity organisation. We provide practical and personal support for people living in the community who are seeking asylum. Our goal is to advocate for a supportive policy and service framework that recognises the rights and needs of people seeking protection in Australia and create a supportive, welcoming community.
About the role
The Health Manager (HM) has the responsibility for leading the ASC Health Service team of employees and volunteers. The ASC Health Service works to assist people seeking asylum to address basic health care needs and increase their capacity to engage in the community as they await a decision on their protection claim. The Centre’s work is underpinned by a set of values built on our commitment to a human rights approach.
This is a permanent, full-time position at 38 hours per week based in Newtown. A full position description is attached.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Health Service team, including staff development and performance reviews
- Develop a clear vision and comprehensive strategy aligned with ASC’s organisational strategic plan 2019 – 2022
- Offer strategic and operational guidance to the Health Service staff and volunteer team
Coordinate health care of individuals/families in partnership with other ASC services and relevant organisations
Lead an integrated health care model that supports a person centred approach
- Oversee case management and care coordination including reviews of caseload with pro-bono GPs visiting services
Pro-actively advocate for increased capacity of mainstream services to more effectively address the needs of people seeking asylum
Monitor and conduct health screening within a nurse-led model
Utilise data to develop advocacy priorities and work with the Centre to advocate for systemic change to improve the lives of people seeking asylum
Liaise with the Sydney Local Health District, regarding KPIs, service provision and reporting requirements
Establish and maintain effective relationships with local health districts, primary health networks and other mainstream health providers
Identify potential partnerships and funding opportunities working in collaboration with the ASC Management Team
Selection Criteria
Essential:
Current AHPRA nursing registration and relevant tertiary qualifications in nursing
Minimum 7 years experience as a Registered Nurse working within mental health and in cross cultural environments
Previous experience working with marginalised groups in the community
Ability to work independently and with strong skills in time management and organisation.
Experience of working in partnership with other agencies to meet client needs.
Ability to work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary and cross-functional team comprised of salaried, pro-bono and volunteer staff.
Excellent oral, written, cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills.
Skill in using electronic databases and electronic filing systems and utilising this information for reporting, including board reports, and advocacy.
Current NSW driving license.
Desirable:
Experience working with people seeking asylum, refugees or internally displaced peoples.
Experience in supervising student placements or volunteers.
Proficiency in a relevant community language.
