About the organisation
EDFA is a national, not-for-profit, member-based organisation with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. EDFA was formed in 2016 and launched in 2017 in response to the lack of practical support available for families and carers of people with eating disorders.
EDFA advocates for and provides practical support to parents and carers, including through its strive carer support groups in each state and territory, regular online educational sessions, and social media and personalised support.
EDFA is a member of Eating Disorders Alliance Australia (EDAA) which includes the Butterfly Foundation and the Australian & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED). EDFA also works closely with state and territory eating disorder organisations, clinicians and researchers.
EDFA’s members care for someone with an eating disorder, have previously cared for someone with an eating disorder, are a relative of someone who has or has had an eating disorder, an organisation whose primary purpose is to support families and carers of those with an eating disorder or are someone with an interest in supporting families and carers of those with an eating disorder.

About the role
About the Board Member Positions
To be eligible to be an EDFA director, a person must be an EDFA member. All EDFA’s current directors have lived experience as carers of people with eating disorders and, going forward, EDFA envisages that the majority of its board will have lived experience as carers. However, EDFA is also interested in recruiting directors who may not be or have been carers but have a strong interest in supporting families and carers of people with an eating disorder.
As a national organisation, EDFA is committed to ensuring that its board is as geographically representative as possible, and is particularly interested in recruiting directors from NSW, QLD, SA, WA, NT and TAS.
Because the vast majority of EDFA’s work is volunteer-based, directors are encouraged to utilise their relevant skills and experience in support of EDFA’s operations as well as providing strategic oversight and having responsibility for the overall governance of the organisation. In particular, the board would welcome directors who may have skills and experience in:
Advocacy, Philanthropy, Health Care, Marketing and Communications and Legal or Company secretary work.
Directors are not financially remunerated, but the role is enormously satisfying for people who are passionate about making a real difference in supporting the families and carers of loved ones with eating disorders. Directors will join the board at an exciting time in EDFA’s development, with the organisation recently being awarded funding from the Australian Government for the first time as well as being increasingly recognised by and working in collaboration with other leading eating disorder support organisations.
