About the role

  • Part-time 0.5FTE (20hr/week, ideally 8am-12pm Mon-Fri)
  • Responsible for ensuring Penington Institute is a leading contributor to public discussion and prominent in the Australian media landscape, along with relevant international settings.

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, the Media Advisor plays a critical role in assisting the Penington Institute achieve its strategic objectives.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of all people through drug policy reform and education.

Deeply engaged with the news cycle, the Media Advisor is responsible for researching and producing high quality media materials, maintaining a high level of engagement with media contacts to proactively coordinate both short-term and long-lead opportunities.  

Based at Penington Institute’s heritage offices in Carlton, the role offers flexibility for hybrid work and a great work environment.

 

The Person:

With exceptional written and verbal communication skills, you will act as a trusted media advisor to the CEO and other senior management, providing sound quality advice to support organisational objectives.

You can relate to people from a diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds, and work in environments which require a high degree of integrity, judgement, confidentiality, sensitivity, and thoughtfulness.

You understand the challenges we face supporting approaches to drug use that promote safety and human dignity.

You have a desire to give back to society by undertaking impactful, cause based work.

You have the confidence to work in a small team, with a high degree of autonomy, while managing and prioritising competing demands.

You understand and are committed to the values of, and benefits delivered by, the not-for-profit sector.

 

The Role:

The Media Advisor plays a broad and critical role in the successful operation of Penington Institute.

You will support the development and lead the implementation of media activities to promote the work of Penington Institute and raise the profile of the CEO.

On behalf of Penington Institute, you will cultivate and maintain strong and effective working relationships with the media and other key stakeholders to provide effective and timely outcomes.

Maintaining a high level of awareness of the political, social and media landscapes, you will ensure effective and proactive issues management by monitoring emerging topics and identifying opportunities.

In collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communication and the CEO, you will provide high quality service to media by promptly responding to media enquiries, developing, and executing responses.

You will research and produce high quality media materials including media releases, key messages, statements, pitches, news stories, opinion pieces, reports, briefing notes and other copy as directed, and within tight timeframes.

The role contributes to the broader objectives of Penington Institute and is key to informing the greater work of Penington Institute to address and reduce harm associated with drug use.

As a small organisation, a hands-on approach, and a willingness to chip in and get things done are essential requirements.
