Surf Life Saving Queensland employs over 600 people throughout Queensland. SLSQ is an efficient and vibrant organisation servicing 32,500 members. It was formally established in 1930 and is the governing body for surf lifesaving in Queensland, comprising 57 affiliated surf lifesaving clubs in six regional branches. The organisation also includes supporters’ clubs and a range of programs that involve more than 462,000 participants. SLSQ is directly affiliated with, and is part of, Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and the International Life Saving Federation (ILF). Surf Life Saving Queensland is built on a fundamental principle: to save lives. Our organisation encompasses several diverse arms – lifesaving services, community education, membership services, surf sports, fundraising and commercial training.

About the role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a tactical and targeted state-wide member recruitment and retention plan, in alignment with club needs and strategic imperatives
  • Benchmarking activities conducted annually and actionable plans developed to address member decline or stagnation
  • Measure , report and provide recommendations on membership trends and sustainability data
  • Research and identify areas of opportunity to apply for grant funding
  • Develop and deliver all aspects of the annual membership plan in conjunction with the GM and regularly review progress against current business plan and KPI’s.
  • Lead Membership Sustainability Project within budget and delivered on time, identifying challenges or roadblocks (e.g. resourcing requirements) to prevent delay.
  • Lead and advocate for educating members on member welfare, safeguarding and Child Risk Youth Safety in line with legislation requirements
  • Coordinate SLSQ’s membership programs and recognition awards
  • Ensure policies and codes relating to youth, membership development, member welfare and junior activities, are reviewed and updated on a regular basis.
  • Oversee the operation of the Membership team, including liaising with Education and Membership Development Coordinators in each region
  • Coach and mentor the Membership Team as required through staff learning and development plans
  • Attend, advocate and present at SLSQ key working groups and committees as required. Represent SLSQ on any National Level relating to membership as required

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Understanding of surf lifesaving or a similar not for profit Community based organisation; including governance, recruitment and retention strategies, member engagement (Essential)
  • Database management experience and ability to utilise data analytics and market research to develop strategy (Essential)
  • Demonstrated experience managing a customer service focused team (Essential)
  • Ability to lead, motivate, supervise and develop a team of customer orientated staff to meet short- and long-term organisational goals (Essential)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with people across the business and externally out to our Branches, Clubs and key stakeholders (Essential)
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in budget management (Essential)
  • Outstanding organisational, time management and prioritisation skills to manage a diverse workload with competing priorities (Essential)
  • Problem solving and diplomacy skills (Essential)
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Sport Management, Marketing or Business (Essential)
  • Experience in a marketing role or exposure to marketing activities (Desirable)
  • Experience in a membership orientated organisation (Desirable)
  • Project Management Experience (Desirable)
  • CRM experience (Desirable)
