About the organisation

Organisation Name : Nature Conservation Council of NSW

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW and the environment groups we represent have been winning protections for nature in NSW for more than 60 years. We’ve been at the centre of many of the state’s iconic conservation battles, and have notched up numerous wins for nature and local communities. We campaign to protect our forests, woodlands and oceans and to achieve effective action on climate change. For more information about our work, visit www.nature.org.au.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced campaigner to drive the next phase of our campaign to stop the rampant clearing of native trees and wildlife habitat across NSW. With only 9% of our state in a near natural condition and koala populations plummeting we need a nature campaigner to spearhead our campaign for new laws to protect native habitat.

As the campaigner you will play a key role on our campaigns team by:

  • leading our work to expose the problem of the land clearing and habitat loss;
  • identifying and removing the political barriers to stronger laws to protect nature;
  • scrutinising the laws and land-clearing approvals to challenge the worst and most immediate destruction; and
  • mobilising state-wide and regional support of farmers, scientists, wildlife carers and the general community for stronger nature protections.

As our nature campaigner you will need to have a sharp sense of politics, an ability to develop long-term and rapid-fire strategy and powerful communication content for key audiences, and to come up with creative ways to support our members and supporters to act.

This position is an ideal opportunity for a great communicator with a passion for driving positive social change, inspiring people to act, and getting out in the field.

 Your role will require you to:

 Refine and develop campaign strategy

Work with Campaigns Director and campaign partners to develop a 12-month campaign plan.

Develop a strong online and offline narrative

Working with our communications team to develop a powerful narrative and communications products for media and supporters.

Grow our supporter base taking effective action

Engage our existing supporter base in the campaign and bring new people to the Nature Conservation Council for greater impact.

Develop strong relationships

Hit the ground running by building productive relationships with others in the movement, with political decision makers, and regional and urban community members.

Move people to action

Recruit a network of wildlife carers, ecologists, farmers and landholders who care about conservation and empower them to become champions for strong laws.

Compile real-world policy solutions

Engage industry experts and movement thinkers to develop credible campaign policy positions for lobbying, media and supporter engagement.

In a typical week as our Nature Campaigner you may:

  • Review the media and prepare a media release and social media content;
  • Meet key decision-makers to lobby for our policy asks;
  • Meet and collaborate with key allies and stakeholders on campaign strategy and actions;
  • Support regional community members to meet their MP about the campaign;
  • Prepare a donor report and meet with a campaign funder;
  • Write a supporter email motivating our 35,000+ supporters to take action.

Selection criteria for the ideal candidate:

  1. A passion for fighting for laws to protect nature, and strong alignment with NCC’s vision.
  2. Experience developing and implementing successful advocacy campaigns.
  3. The ability to build and maintain professional relationships quickly on the phone, face-to-face and online, and to inspire people to take action on an ongoing basis.
  4. Ability to think through complex policy and communicate it simply and clearly.
  5. Experience facilitating effective alliances or campaign collaborations.
  6. Strong communication skills, including experience identifying media stories, and ability to write effective emails and social media content.

Desirable skills include:

  1. Experience with community organising.
  2. Knowledge of environment issues, particularly land clearing, threatened species conservation, ecological restoration or planning law.
  3. Ability to use GIS mapping software.
