Our Mission / Objective

Background and Purpose:

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity keeping children safe from violence. We care for children who have experienced or witnessed serious violence and run programs which help prevent violence in the lives of children. The Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged 6 and 3, who with their mother and 32 others were tragically killed at Port Arthur on April 28, 1996. We are honoured to have Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark as International Patron, Prime Minister The Hon. John Howard MP as National Patron and Co-Founder Walter Mikac as Patron.

Our Work:

We care for children Australia-wide who experience or witness serious violence, supporting their recovery from trauma in order to minimise the ongoing impact of the violence.

Mission Statement:

Keeping children safe from violence.

General Donations

Every day Australian children witness or experience violence or bullying. These children need your help. There are more than 30,000 children in out-of-home care in Australia. One in four young people are bullied every fortnight or more often. Your donation to The Alannah and Madeline Foundation will make a real difference.

Volunteer with us

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation relies on the generous support of our dedicated volunteers. Every contribution helps us keep children safe from violence.

Every little bit helps

Our large base of volunteers generously give their time to help with office administration, Buddy Bag packing and at our events held through out the year.

Starry Starry Night volunteer Jane says, “I had always been touched by the sentiment of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation and think they do fantastic work, particularly for children who have no control over their circumstances. So when I had a chance to volunteer for Starry Starry Night I jumped at it. It is a really well organised event and what I loved most about the night was the fantastic feeling of everyone getting together and having fun. The entertainment was great, the celebrities were very warm and friendly – it didn’t really feel like work at all. I would highly recommend others volunteer for Starry Starry Night, especially if you are looking to have a fun night out, while giving time to this very worthwhile cause.”
