Our Mission / Objective

At BackTrack, we enable young people who have lost their way to reconnect with education and training, become work ready and secure meaningful employment. Most importantly we get young people 'back on track' by developing strong, happy & healthy foundations that result in positive pathways and full participation in their communities.

Our Services

The youth BackTrack works with are mostly rural and aged between 12 and 19 years of age. They arrive at BackTrack with multiple and complex challenges in education, health, justice, housing and employment making it a struggle to ft into the mainstream system and society. There is little prospect of employment, or being able to maintain a happy, healthy and sustainable life.

Support is provided under a flexible and multifaceted model that addresses four key domains of risk:

  • education and employment,
  • health and wellbeing,
  • substance use,
  • and crime.

The BackTrack programs enables youth to build resilience, reconnect with education and training, become work ready, find jobs, heal from psychological trauma and pursue life pathways that result in meaningful lives and community participation.

The support offered is provided in an environment that allows youth to feel safe and without fear of abandonment, to naturally develop a social fabric that they feel comfortable and worthy within, and which they voluntarily participate in. This environment surrounds youth with positive role models and positive activities that all lead to positive life outcomes and ultimately resilience to lead meaningful lives outside of BackTrack.

At any given time, 40 young people aged between 11 to 19 are involved in BackTrack’s programs. Over the past 14 years BackTrack has worked with more than 1000 young people. Studies have found that over 80% of the youth who leave BackTrack, do so in some form of education, employment or training. It has also been found that BackTrack has had a significant positive influence on local crime rates with juvenile crime down 30% in Armidale as a result of BackTrack's work.

Programs offered by BackTrack include

BackTrack’s programs include

  • Paws Up: Animal behavioural therapy supporting self-moderating behaviours, leadership and self-confidence
  • The Paddock: Classroom learning focusing on literacy and numeracy with practical applications
  • AgLads: Skills based training focusing on agriculture and soft-skills required for employment
  • Iron Man Welders: Workshop trades training and artistic activities

All activities are delivered in parallel with individual case management support.

Additional program support provided by BackTrack supports the development of life pathways and include:

  • Warrah: Residential accommodation for homeless youth and supported living skills to enable independence and integration with mainstream society
  • BT Works: BT Works is BackTrack’s employment social enterprise offering employment support to young people.
