Our Mission / Objective

Children First Foundation has two programs that provide care for disadvantaged international and Australian children.  Miracle sMiles brings children from disadvantaged countries to Australia for surgery that cannot be performed in their country of birth.

Between the Gaps was established in 2008 to support disadvantaged Australian families with disabled or chronically ill children by providing the ‘gap’ funding for equipment or services that are only partially funded by government and other support agencies.

The Foundation was established in 1999 to expand the work of Moira Kelly AO.  Although Moira stepped away from Children First in 2012 the work of the Foundation has continued and grown.

Projects in Progress

With the generousity of surgeons and hospitals in Australia who support our Miracle sMiles program children from countries expriencing poverty or confilct receive life-changing surgery that dramatically improves their quality of life. While they are in Australia the children are cared for at our Rehabilitation Home – known as The Farm – in Kilmore in Victoria. The children are cared for by a small staff and a team of volunteers, creating a ‘home away from home’ for the children. The staff and volunteers work towards gaining the confidence of the children in preparation for surgery – some have undergone incorrect and painful treatment at home which can cause fear when facing more surgery. Many have been ostracised and excluded by their communities due to their ailment or appearance. All care pre- and post surgery is undertaken by staff and volunteers at the Farm.

Through our Between the Gaps progam we assist Australian families who struggle to meet the expenses associated with their disabled or chronically ill children.  Low or single income families find it impossible to raise funds to upgrade specialised mobility or learning aids for a disabled child, or to meet the day to day expenses incurred when visiting their chronically ill child in a long stay hospital admission.
