Our Mission / Objective

EMILY’S List Australia is a national network of women committed to electing progressive Labor women to parliament.

Founded in 1996, EMILY’s List provides mentoring, training and support to women candidates.

Since 1996, we have assisted more than 230 women to enter parliament. But there is much more work to be done.

EMILY is an acronym. It stands for Early Money Is Like Yeast – it helps raise the “dough”. When we give women money early in their campaign, we help other people have the confidence to also provide financial support.

How to help us

Wills and Bequests

A legacy for the future Making a bequest to EMILY’s List Australia provides an opportunity to leave a gift which secures our future. A bequest can be directed to EMILY’s List Australia or to a specific state or program. Your will could include provision for EMILY’s List Australia in the following way:

“I give and bequeath (state specific dollar amount or description of asset or percentage of estate) to EMILY’s List Australia, Level 2, 210 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, Victoria to be applied for the general purposes of enabling more progressive Labor women to enter Parliament across Australia. I declare that a receipt by the secretary of EMILY’s List Australia shall be an absolute discharge to my Trustee for the same.”

You can also amend this wording if you want to direct your bequest to a specific State or program such as Gender Gap Research, Next Generation, Early Money or the Partnership for Equity (PEN). Please seek legal advice when writing or updating your will to ensure your wishes can be carried out.

Joan Kirner’s Legacy – Gender Gap Research Fund

Throughout her time managing and supporting EMILY’s List, Joan Kirner AC remained dedicated to Gender Gap Research – qualitative polling funded by EMILY’s List prior to every federal election to determine the issues of most concern to women voters. This polling – carried out in marginal seats where EMILY’s List candidates are standing – is research of women, by women, for women. The results of the research are provided to EMILY’s List candidates to build into their individual campaigning and to the ALP for its overall campaigns. Gender Gap Research costs between $3,500 and $5,000 per seat.

“The quality of Gender Gap Research commissioned by EMILY’s List was invaluable in helping me shape Labor campaigns to meet the needs of women.” Jenny Macklin MP, EMILY’s List Founding member

Such specialised research does not come cheaply. The Gender Gap Research is conducted by women who are experts in conducting this type of research. The funds raised are used to pay for their services and expert analysis.

When asked the area of fundraising she would like EMILY’s List to conduct in her name, Joan nominated Gender Gap Research. Joan was always unstintingly generous in her own personal and financial support for Early Money and Directed Donations to assist EMILY’s List candidates to campaign. She believed, however, that Gender Gap Research was vital to ensure that candidates have access to effective, reliable information on which to base their campaigns as women candidates. EMILY’s List is honouring Joan’s wish by establishing the Joan Kirner Gender Gap Research Fund. We want this fund to remain sustainable for the long term and we will undertake an annual fundraising campaign to ensure it continues to meet its objectives.
