Our Mission / Objective

Gawura’s mission is to provide a quality Kindergarten to Year 6 education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in a caring, Christian environment.

Our Services

Gawura is a Kindergarten to Year 6 ‘school within a school’ for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children.  Year 6 students are invited to complete Years 7-12 at St Andrew's Cathedral School with scholarships provided for each child.

Benefits

Small class sizes and a high teacher/student ratio. Approximately 1 teacher to 7 students.

The classroom is a cultural heart for students & families & allows a maximum focus on numeracy and literacy.

High school students have pathways and milestone support throughout and beyond school.

A culturally relevant curriculum with Indigenous perspectives taught connecting the mainstream curriculum to First Peoples’ history.

Outcomes

10 students have completed their HSC – eight were accepted into university.

Attendance rates average between 92% – 94%.

NAPLAN results for students who commenced Kindergarten in 2007 (currently Year 11) have been above both the Indigenous average nationally & national averages in numeracy & literacy.

Some students are 2 to 4 years ahead of Indigenous Australian educational norms and have progressed into high school with academic outcomes equal to or better than their non-Indigenous peers.
