A celebration of queer identity

Queer Chameleon and Friends retains the spirit and tone of the original webcomics and is an uplifting introduction to the queer community.

Who would’ve thought that a cartoon reptile would have so much to say about LGBTQIA+ issues?

Fans of the Queer Chameleon webcomic would, and now fans and newbies alike can learn about the queer community from Queer Chameleon with the release of Queer Chameleon and Friends.

Written and illustrated by first-time-author and webcomic creator Amee Wilson, this colourful little book takes characters made famous through the webcomic and transfers them to the paper page.

True to the spirit of the original online comics, it considers issues related to the community through a positive and queer-affirming lens and retains the sassy facial expressions and honest tone of the much-loved online sensation.

Though only short, and with very few words, this book is a fun and uplifting introduction to LGBTQIA+ concepts. Each page is also packed with information that will comfort and empower members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies looking to provide as much support as possible, from what each flag represents to what not to say to someone who has just ‘come out’.

“Some comics I created to make you laugh, some to educate and others simply to give you the warm fuzzies,” Wilson states in the introduction, and it’s true; you’ll run the full gamut of emotions as you flip through the pages. For allies, there may be some comfortable and some not-so-comfortable truths. There are also laugh-out-loud moments about the stereotypes that are funny but true, that will have many in the community wheezing “it me!”

Heartwarming, uplifting and inclusive, this will delight older kids and adults in the queer community and beyond.

Queer Chameleon and Friends is published by Penguin Random House.
