Not for Profit Wins PM's Environmentalist of the Year Award

Environment group and Not for Profit organisation Earthwatch has won the top prize in the annual Banksia Foundation Awards – the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year.
The award was presented on behalf of the Prime Minister by Lindsay Tanner, the Federal Minister for Finance and Deregulation at the Banksia Awards which celebrate environmental leadership and innovation.
Earthwatch Australia’s Executive Director, Richard Gilmore says the award acknowledges their great work in Australia and overseas spanning more than 25 years of environmental research.
Nominees for the award were judged on a sustained contribution to the environment, the ability to influence understanding and/or appreciation of the environment and for leadership or inspiration in environmental management or protection.
Earthwatch was recognised for supporting the work of environmental researchers and inspiring a generation of informed and enthusiastic citizen scientists.
The 2009 Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year was awarded to Anna Rose, Amanda McKenzie and Ellen Sandell from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition.
The Australian Youth Climate Coaliton (AYCC) is an umbrella organisation representing a broad range of youth organisations across Australia concerned about climate change.
Climate change poses the greatest threat to our future and the AYCC aim to educate and mobilise their generation to combat it.
