Looking for Local Heroes

Local residents in Victoria have the opportunity to recognise and reward the special individuals living in their neighbourhood when nominations for the IGA Community Chest Unsung Heroes (CCUH) Awards open on 1 June 2009.
Unsung Heroes are the individuals who take the time to visit their local nursing home each week, the parents who volunteer their time to coach the local soccer team every Saturday morning and the brave firefighters who risk their lives to save others.
IGA’s Victorian State Marketing Manager Karen Fahey says, IGA is looking for the individuals who give up their time to make a difference in someone else’s life – usually unpaid and often without thanks.
In Victoria last year, IGA received 94 nominations for ‘unsung heroes’ and a panel of judges then selected eight regional winners.
This year, IGA will select seven regional winners in Victoria in accordance with IGA’s own ‘village network’ – the local business units which work together to meet the needs of their local customers. IGA operates in more than 1300 local communities across Australia.
Regional winners will be awarded $250 worth of IGA vouchers and a $250 cash donation will also be given to their nominated registered charity or Not for Profit.
These regional winners are then automatically in the running to take out the state prize, which is decided by an online public vote. The state winner’s chosen registered charity or not-for-profit organisation will be rewarded a further $5,000 donation.
