The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Internet Activity Survey report shows broadband Internet use is booming in households and businesses across Australia.

The report shows far more Australians are subscribing to broadband (3.91 million) as opposed to dial-up (2.75 million). This represents an increase of 1.8 million broadband subscribers from March 2005 to September 2006.

Some 6.65 million Australians were Internet subscribers (826 000 businesses and 5.83 million households) at the end of the September 2006 quarter.

The highest proportion of Internet subscribers were in New South Wales (33%), followed by Victoria (24%), Queensland (20%) and Western Australia (11%)

There were 467 Internet Service Providers operating in Australia at the end of September 2006, 32% fewer than in March 2005.
