CSR in Focus 2005 – Advertorial
CSR in Focus 2005 is a unique ‘case study’ led conference aimed at unlocking the potential of CSR to improve stakeholder engagement and drive sustainable performance.
It’s a two-day conference to be held on the 7th and 8th June 2005 at Rydges Hotel, in Melbourne.
The conference brings together a group of leading CSR practitioners and experts who will share their experiences
with respect to CSR & Public Policy, CSR & Business Alignment and Successful CSR Partnerships.
The opening expert Keynote address will be delivered by Professor David Birch, Director, Corporate Citizenship
Research Unit Deakin University.
The topic will be Corporate Social Responsibility and the Challenges to Public Policy for Business, Government and Civil Society.
The issues of corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship have been on the agenda in Australia
for several years now.
There is no doubt that these years have seen a growing awareness of the non-negotiability of the need for business to engage more fully with its social and environmental responsibilities to the communities within which it seeks a licence to operate in sustainable ways.
According to Professor Birch, Government, at its various levels in Australia, has been somewhat slower to move
this agenda forward, although things are changing, particularly at local and state levels.
As Australian companies continue to commit resources to both CSR policy and practices, there is a growing gap emerging between business and government in the public policy arena.
This presentation will explore this gap, with specific reference to the value of CSR best practice and policy as
enabling vehicles for narrowing the divide. Specific case studies from both within Australia and overseas will be featured.
Professor Birch is on the Editorial Boards of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship, The Journal of Business Governance & Ethics and Asian Business & Management. His research partnerships have been with leading Australian organisations including BP, Rio Tinto, The City of Melbourne, World Vision, BHP Billiton, ANZ, and Telstra. He is a widely published author.
