Australian Human Rights Awards

‘Start small, think big’ is a motto for many individuals and organisations who work everyday without fuss or fanfare to promote and protect human rights and overcome discrimination in Australia.

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission is looking to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of these quiet achievers by nominating them for the 2004 Human Rights Medal and Awards.

Since 1987, the Human Rights Medal has recognised the achievements of an individual who made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights in Australia.

Human Rights Awards are also presented to an individual or organisations that have made significant contributions in the areas of:

Media (categories for Print Media, Television and Radio)
Arts Non-Fiction
Community, and
Law

Do you know someone who should be nominated either for the Medal or one of the Awards? Perhaps it’s someone or a group in Australia who have promoted:

– action to overcome discrimination or infringements of human
rights
– greater harmony between people of different race, sex, age,
sexuality or ethnic origin
– the rights of Indigenous Australians
– equal opportunity for people with a disability, or
– awareness of issues of injustice or inequality

Entering yourself, another person or an organisation in the Human

The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on 10
December 2004 (International Human Rights Day) at the Sheraton on
the Park Hotel in Sydney. Entries close 8 October 2004.
