Community Legal Centres Funding Boost

The Commonwealth Government has recently provided a funding boost to all of its community legal centres around Australia.
The Government currently funds over 120 community legal centres through the Commonwealth Community Legal Services Program. These community legal centres will receive additional funding of $760,000.
This additional funding will enable legal centres to continue providing quality legal services to the community.
It includes a one-off payment to each centre, amounting to three per cent of that centre’s recurrent funding.
It also includes $80,000 for a central fund to assist community legal centres with their professional indemnity insurance.
The Government has also distributed $68,000 to a number of smaller community legal services serving rural, regional or remote communities in Australia.
These one off payments are in addition to recurrent funding of community legal centres of more than $20 million in 2003-04.
The Government says it recognises the important contribution of the community legal sector in providing assistance to the disadvantaged and as innovators in addressing legal needs.
