Not for Profit Communicators Group

The world of the media, public relations and communications can be daunting and largely a budgetary afterthought in many smaller Australian Not for Profits. Now a Not for Profit Communicators Group has been established to help share information, ideas, and network!
The group’s aims are to:
– value add to individual communications programs through networking
– offer assistance and support particularly for lone practitioners
– share knowledge and research
– explore collaborative research opportunities
Organiser and Media Relations Manager with the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, Janet Granger-Wilcox says the group was launched a few months ago with the assistance of the Australian Centre for Public Communication at the University of Technology in Sydney.
Mostly through email networking, Granger–Wilcox says the group has gathered 60 people so far and they are now in the process of forming a committee.
She says many others are interested in attending events only.
The Communicators Group work in a wide range of organisations including charities, sporting bodies, government (local and state), NGOs, non-profit superannuation companies and community organisations.
The group held its first seminar recently, featuring Jim McNamara as guest speaker. Jim spoke about “PR on a shoestring” and presented practical ideas during the seminar, which was attended by approximately 50 people.
Granger-Wilcox says that until the group is more established, its activities are largely limited to seminars every couple of months, and as a central registration point for internships/work experience opportunities.
The next event is on Wednesday 23 July featuring Australian employee
communication expert Rodney Gray. It will be held at the Shepherd Centre,
391-401 Abercrombie Street, Darlington NSW starting at 5 for 5.30pm (admission
$10 at the door). Another seminar is planned for Wednesday 23 September and is likely to feature the topic of social marketing campaigns.
