Philanthropy Australia -Grantmaking Essentials

Philanthropy Australia is leading the way in assisting those wanting to learn more about the environment and current good practice of grantmaking with a series of seminars in Melbourne and Sydney in October.

Grantmaking Essentials: practice, policy, priorities is a professional development opportunity for people at every level of experience in the field of grantmaking. The program provides access to the latest information and thinking from a national and international perspective.

It is an ideal refresher for people with years of experience, and also for newcomers and intending practitioners. It aims to raise skill levels, review your own grantmaking program, and strengthen your capabilities.

The seminar is open to anyone engaged with grantmaking, especially staff and trustees of trusts and foundations, including operating foundations, community foundations and statutory funds; individual donors and allied professionals such as financial and legal advisers.

The seminars will cover a number of topics including :

 Popular and effective strategies in information management and administration
 Nuts and bolts of grantmaking, including receiving, researching, monitoring and acquitting funding proposals, and making best use of systems, technology and tools
 Essential ingredients of a ‘great grant’
 Building effective relationships with grantseekers and making the most of every grant dollar
 Governance and accountability
 Grantmaking ethics, values and the politics of giving
 Philanthropic grantmaking in the context of a civil society
 Mapping the territory of philanthropy across the world

The presentations are tailored to the interests and skill levels of every participant, and combine formal presentation, dialogue, plus practical application of information, samples and examples.

Genevieve Timmons presents and leads the seminar, and brings to this work the experience of 15 years of grantmaking, as an executive manager, consultant and trainer both in Australia and internationally. As a consultant in philanthropy, she is engaged by grantmakers on a wide variety of assignments, including design of new funding structures; identification of appropriate grantmaking policy and practice; conduct of ‘philanthropy audits’, review and forward planning exercises; evaluation; and facilitation of professional development seminars.

Genevieve is a Senior Fellow of the Johns Hopkins International Fellows in Philanthropy, a Fellow of Leadership Victoria, and is conducting relevant post-graduate research at the University of Melbourne.

Vanessa Meachen brings specialist information from 4 years of experience as the Research and Information Officer with Philanthropy Australia, the national membership association for philanthropic trusts and foundations.

As a core staff member, Vanessa has been responsible for delivery of membership publications and products, such as User Guides and Fact Sheets, and applying the use of technology tools.

Membership
Philanthropy Australia’s mission is to promote and protect the interests of family, private, corporate and community giving in Australia.

As a member of Philanthropy Australia, you will be part of the philanthropic ‘voice’ which promotes and protects giving and volunteering. Philanthropy Australia works to improve public understanding and recognition of the relationship between philanthropy and the wellbeing of the community.

Philanthropy Australia membership offers a range of services and products to bodies and individuals that are grantmakers/givers or are combined grantmakers and grantseekers.

There are several types of membership: Full, Associate and Affiliate.

Full membership is open to individuals or bodies whose philanthropic activities are primarily grantmaking/giving. Fees for Full Members are based on the total philanthropic disbursements made by individual persons or bodies in a financial year.

The Associate category of membership is open to individuals or bodies whose philanthropic activities are not primarily grantmaking. The Fee is $1,100 per annum (includes GST).

Affiliate membership is open to non-grantmaking bodies which nevertheless have a clear interest or involvement in the practice of philanthropy (eg University Schools, Centres or Departments offering courses or research in Philanthropy or the Not for Profit sector). The fee is $550 including GST.
