Government Survey of Online IT Capabilities
2 April 2002 at 1:04 pm

Government departments and agencies are surging ahead with the Commonwealth’s IT commitment to provide all appropriate services online.

The National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) has released the results of the fourth Government Online Survey reaffirming the Prime Minister’s announcement at the World Congress on IT in February that all Government departments and agencies met the commitment to provide all appropriate services online by December 2001.

The NOIE report shows that by October last year there were 1665 services and information sources available online across Government. Twenty per cent of these services provide transactional capabilities.

In addition, the report reveals a further 600 services that have been earmarked as suitable for online service delivery at some point in the future.

Over 50 per cent of these services will have transactional capabilities.
The report says the figures highlight the success of government agencies in meeting other elements of the Government Online Strategy. For example, more than 60 per cent of agencies expected to implement simple procurement systems by December 2001 enabling suppliers to trade electronically.

The majority of remaining agencies expect to achieve full implementation during 2002.

It says that one of the most successful elements of the Government’s Online Strategy has been to open up access to government for people living in rural and regional Australia.

It reveals that 16 per cent of current online services are targeted specifically at rural and regional Australians.

Levels of accessibility continue to increase with 63 per cent of agencies reporting full compliance with accessibility guidelines and nearly half of remaining agencies reporting a compliance rate of 70% or more of website pages.

User confidence continues to be enhanced through the Government’s strategy with the report showing solid progress in the areas of privacy and security.

The fourth and final round of the Government Online survey was conducted in October 2001. It involved the collection of a comprehensive range of information and online performance indicators from 131 Federal Government departments and agencies.
