CHOGM Volunteers

Already people on the Sunshine Coast and from Brisbane have been contacting the CHOGM Task Force and offering their volunteer services for CHOGM 2002.
The Australian CHOGM spokesman, Andrew Reynolds, says Australia has a proud tradition of volunteering and once again people have come forward as soon as the need was identified.
The Task Force is looking for volunteers to operate in a range of capacities such as drivers for delegations, media assistants, venue staff, information technology, airport assistants and in general clerical positions.
Preference is to be given to volunteers from the Sunshine Coast.
Reynolds says the world witnessed the generosity of our community with the massive effort made by volunteers in supporting the Goodwill Games in Brisbane only recently and of course the ‘best ever’ Olympic Games in Sydney last year.
He says now volunteers have come forward for the Coolum CHOGM and he has no doubt that they will put a particularly Australian stamp on the event.
According to Volunteering Queensland, the organisation responsible for the successful recruitment drive for CHOGM 2001, the total number of volunteers required for the postponed CHOGM is 300.
Following the recruitment and selection process, training will be conducted to ensure all volunteers are well prepared for the tasks involved.
Volunteering Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Dianne Morgan, says the CHOGM volunteering program provides Queenslanders with a great opportunity to participate in an important international event which demonstrates the warmth and hospitable nature of Queenslanders.
Volunteering Queensland is the peak body for coordination of volunteering in Queensland and is a member of Volunteering Australia, as are other state volunteering bodies.
The national and state organisations are primarily funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Family and Community Services.
Background Information
Volunteers will be required from 25 February until 6 March although this will not necessarily be continuous.
Training will be provided from early February.
