Charities Inquiry Report Due

The Inquiry into the Definition of Charities and related organisations will make its report to the Federal Government on June 30th after being granted a three-month extension.
The Treasurer, Peter Costello, will take delivery of the report but details of when its findings will be made public have not been announced.
The Committee received almost 400 submissions from interested organisations and individuals.
The Inquiry was set up in September last year. Its members include the Chairman, Ian Sheppard AO QC who is a former Judge with the Supreme Court of NSW and the Federal Court of Australia; Robert Fitzgerald, a Commissioner of Community Services in NSW and the former President of ACOSS ; and David Gonski, from Wentworth Associates and a member of the PM’s Community Business Partnership.
Inquiry Secretary, Christine Barron, says it will be up to the Government to decide when it will make public the Committee’s findings.
Barron says it is a thorough document and admits the final report is a ‘weighty tome’ that would take some time to read and digest.
Pro Bono Australia will prepare a special edition on the report as soon as it is made available.
