A call for help in compiling a list of significant women in Australia has seen the Office of the Status of Women inundated with names!

Cathy Cornish from the OSW in the Department of the Prime Minister says the names of hundreds of women have been sent to them.

She says the OSW has been concerned in the past that many women of outstanding achievement do not receive the recognition they deserve, particularly where their work at the local level does not draw the attention that more high profile women attract.

The Office of the Status of Women is looking at ways it might be able to assist in raising the profile of these achievers who contribute to community building and the development of the Australian society.

The list being compiled includes women who have helped build communities, inspirational women, long serving women volunteers, women breaking the glass ceiling and women making significant contributions in their fields.

Cathy Cornish says she is particularly pleased with the number of indigenous women who have been nominated.

She says the OSW had little idea of the amount of wonderful things happening at local community level…and the names of significant women are still being received!

You can still e-mail your list of names of significant women with a brief description of each to the Leadership Section in the Office of the Status of Women by calling
(02) 6271 5790 or fax (02) 6271 5751 or e-mail: catharine.cornish@pmc.gov.au

Tell us about them too via e-mail to probono@probonoaustralia.com.au.
