Indigenous Scholarship Awarded

This month the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem awarded their second Ron Castan Memorial Indigenous People’s Scholarship to assist Aboriginal communities.

Queensland GP, Dr. David Brockman won the scholarship to study his International Masters in Public Health at the Hebrew University.

34 year old Dr. Brockman is a descendant of the Nunukal and Nugi tribes of North Stradbroke Island and is currently based at Ballina Hospital in NSW.

The first scholarship recipient, Dr. Alex Brown completed his Masters with outstanding results, and now works as the Director of Communicable Diseases at the Alice Springs Health Service.

The Executive Director of A.F.H.U.J, Fairlie Nassau says the scholarship was originally conceived to help young Aboriginal doctors gain an international qualification and the scope has now been broadened to include any field of endeavour which will help the Aboriginal community.

‘With new initiatives for Aboriginal landowners to undertake research and development, it is now likely that future recipients may well be from the fields of agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture as well as community development.’
