The world's first fundraising awards program has been launched in the UK with the FIA in Australia being one of the award hosts.

World's First International Fundraising Awards

The UK Resource Alliance (RA), an NGO that builds global capacity in fundraising, has launched the world's first international awards program for celebrating fundraising excellence.

The new awards are endorsed and supported by national fundraising associations from around the globe including the Fundraising Institute of Australia.

RA says it will draw together the winners of more than a dozen country’s national awards schemes to compete the best against the best, winners against winners.

Recommended award winners will be entered by national awards hosts that include the UK’s Institute of Fundraising, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) based in the USA, the Fundraising Institute of Australia, associations in Europe, and from India, Japan and Brazil.

The new awards are set to honour and celebrate fundraising excellence while setting aspirational standards and best practice on a world-wide scale.

Resource Alliance CEO, Neelam Makhijani, explains the rationale behind the new awards, saying they see the new global awards as a way to provide stimulus and enthusiasm to many more countries, encouraging them to launch their own national awards and helping them become part of the global fundraising community.

FIA CEO Christine McMillan says the FIA is delighted to join with national fundraising peak bodies across the world in co-hosting the first ever international fundraising awards.

She says the Australian sector already has international fundraising standards and international certification and these new global awards are a great opportunity for fundraising to be really seen as a profession.

Lindsay Boswell, CEO of the UK’s Institute of Fundraising says awards program is a great idea and the association is looking forward to seeing its own awards winners proving that the best of British can also lead the world when it comes to fundraising.

Paulette Maehara, CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) based in the USA added her support for the new awards saying AFP encourages the recognition of fundraising excellence and the importance of philanthropy to increasing capacity of civil societies around the world.

The first global awards will be presented at the Resource Alliance’s flagship event the International Fundraising Congress (IFC) 2010, held in the Netherlands this October, where the RA will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Only winners of national awards will be eligible for entry into the Resource Alliance Global Awards for Fundraising. The national hosts will determine which of their awards winners will be entered to represent their country on the global awards stage and they will be required to submit a brief entry form. They can choose to enter one or more categories and shortlisted entrants will be invited to the awards ceremony at the IFC. Entries will be judged by an independent jury made up of five eminent professionals from around the world.

The Resource Alliance Global Awards for Fundraising will comprise four categories, two for organisations and two for individuals. 

Categories for Organisations:

  • Big Idea, Small Budget Award
  • Innovative Fundraising Campaign Award

Categories for Individuals:

  • The Global Fundraiser Award
  • The Outstanding Volunteer Award

The deadline for entries is 1st September 2010.

Entries will be accepted from national awards hosts only and must be winners of the current year’s awards program.
