Almost 90,000 Australian men are disappearing behind a thicket of facial hair, with this year’s Movember campaign kicking off yesterday.

The aim of Movember is for men to grow their facial hair for 30 days and raise money for men’s causes such depression and prostate cancer.

In 2010, more than 130,000 Australians took part, raising $25 Million AUD.

The event had humble beginnings in Melbourne.

It was started in 1999 when a group of friends began growing moustaches for charity.

In 2004 the Movember Foundation was set up enabling the public to donate – and now it has gone global with campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland.

Last year 1.1 million people took part around the world.

Organisers told Pro Bono Australia that this year they are bracing for their biggest year yet.
