The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) Board has appointed Phil Naden as their new chief executive (NSW/ACT).

ALS Chair Iris White said the selection process for the position was very competitive.

White said that Naden won the position due to his leadership skills, his knowledge of the Criminal Justice and Care and Protection systems, his background with Barnado’s, the Queensland Police Force and the Aboriginal Legal Service.

“The ALS is going through a period of renewal with a new Board to be elected in the next month, and Mr Moore’s resignation while disappointing to lose such a solid performer in maintaining the stability of the organisation, means we also welcome a new leader in Mr Naden,” said White.

“Our organisation has been operating since 1970 backed by the commitment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community across NSW and ACT and has experienced many periods of change, more often due to adjustments in Federal Government funding requirements.

“Right now however renewal is occurring from the ‘ground up’ and we openly welcome the vision and energy the next generation of Aboriginal people will bring to our wonderful community organisation.

Outgoing CEO Gerry Moore has been in the position for four years and will hand over to Phil Naden in July 2012.

Naden is a Justice of the Peace (JP) and has been appointed by the Minister as a member of the Serious Young Offenders Review Panel.
